I would guess that most of us desire to thrive. We want to ace our exams, work at enjoyable jobs, and live long, happy, healthy lives.

I have bad news. There is nothing you can do to absolutely ensure a flourishing future.  Studying for 10 hours will not necessarily result in an A+. Sometimes, teachers throw curve-ball questions. You may finally attain your dream job only to realize that your coworkers are arrogant and rude. You may eat only organic foods, workout 3-5 times a week, and sleep 8 hours a night only to be seriously injured in a car accident.  I am sorry to paint such a dismal scene, but these facts are undeniably true. Ultimately, we have no control over our future.

Nonetheless, God’s Word gives instructions for living that will definitely lead to prosperity.   I cannot promise that this wealth will be monetary or physical, but I do know that spiritual success is attainable.

Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither –
    whatever they do prospers.

-Psalm 1:1-3

There are three warnings are given to those who want to thrive.

  • Do not follow ungodly counsel.
  • Do not spend a lot of time with sinners.
  • Do not be taught by mockers or disdainful people

Instead…

  • Spend time in God’s Word
  • Find your delight and satisfaction in the Lord

Although this passage does not promise physical prosperity, God does promise that the person who follows these steps will spiritually fruitful and “Oh, how very happy.”
